What If My Green Card Expires Before Getting Citizenship?

Living in the U.S. with a green card always carries a worry with it. Those who hold a green card for living in America temporarily always worry about their green cards expiring before they can get proper citizenship. But an immigration lawyer in OKC can tell you that you don’t have to worry at all.

For specifically this issue, the USCIS (the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services) has a particular method called the form I-90. This form will help you to get a new card. If your card has expired or is about to expire within the next six months, then you can apply to the USCIS via form I-90.

How to Apply with I-90?

Step One- you can file the form I-90 using the online system or via mail. If you are doing it online, {which is easier} then visit the following URL https://www.uscis.gov/i-90

Step Two- click on the “file online” tab.

Step Three- for filling the form I-90 online, you need to create an account.

Step four- A form appears. Please fill out this form with the following details -

  1. Alien registration number

  2. USCIS account number

  3. Mailing address

  4. Full name

  5. Your gender, date of birth, place of birth and parents' names.

  6. Immigration category code

  7. Green card receiving date

  8. Select a reason to fill this form

There are some more similar technical fields in that form that an immigration lawyer in OKC will be happy to explain to you. When completing and submitting the form, you will also have to pay a processing fee which is $45 as of now.

After you submit the form, the USCIS will process the form. If they find everything is in order, then they will summon you to a location near you for some documentation purposes.

Pre-Citizenship Card Expiry

If your green card expires while you have applied for citizenship and are waiting, there is no need to worry. You can reapply for a green card temporarily using the I-90 form as well. One point to note here is that if you are unable to submit the form yourself, then another person who can vouch for you can also fill out and submit the form on your behalf.

However, if you are applying through someone else, do remember that this person may be called upon to verify your details. They would also have to be prepared to travel with you. In effect, they would have to have legal; authority over you and also be able to prove that applying yourself could not be advantageous.
